Enlarged Prostate Treatment

Enlarged Prostate Treatment

Men were thought as invincible until they have enlarged prostate. The difficulty a patient of enlarged prostate has to go through is burdensome as it is painful. Men who have this condition are curtailed from relishing happy lives.

The known cause of enlarged prostate, which is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia has not been fully understood by medical science. The common underlying reason of this condition is man's ageing process. As men brow older, their prostate grows bigger too.

The development of prostate is naturally occurring. The size of prostate, which is exactly the same with that of a walnut, changes during pubescent and it changes again when a man reaches mid 20s. The size continues to change and the effects can only be manifested when a man is already 50 years old and above.

Enlarged prostate can be detected when symptoms starts to appear. One of the symptoms is difficulty in urinating, however this symptom is also the same with that of cancer and prostitis. When the urgency and difficulty of urinating is more obvious a visit to the doctor is more necessary so that enlarged prostate treatment will be prescribed.

Drug therapy is one of the available enlarged prostate treatments. These drugs are intended to inhibit further growth and shrink the size of the prostate. Drugs like Finasteride (Proscar) and Dutasteride (Avodart) are just two of the many drugs that are approved by the Food and Drug Administration of the United States of America.

Enlarged prostate treatment like surgery is also one of the better options. There are many methods in enlarged prostate treatment surgery. One of the methods is the one approved by FDA in 1996, which uses transurethral microwave. Transurethral microwave thermotherapy (TUMT) utilizes a catheter in sending microwaves that are computer-regulated to the prostate. The catheter will release a heat that is 111 degrees Fahrenheit, to portions of the prostate. The procedure does not promise to cure BPH but can alleviate the inconvenience brought by about by the symptoms.

Transurethral needle ablation (TUNA) was also approved in 1996. The procedure, utilizing a needle inserted via the urethra gives off radiofrequency wave energy that will eventually burn the portion of the prostate while aiming not to damage the urethra from the heat emitted. The procedure can as well improve the flow of urine. This method has no proven side effects like impotence and incontinence.

Surely there are many other enlarged prostate treatments, but any of the treatments can only be prescribed after through tests has been performed on the patient. Digital rectal exam, urine flow analysis, and prostate specific antigen blood test are just some of the tests that will be conducted.
